What to do with old video tapes?

I have done a big clear out of my old VHS tapes and wondered how to responsibly dispose of them.

Looking on the web there were ideas like:
using the tape for bird scarers in the garden and allotment
Making a DVD tower out of the cases
Making yoyo's out of the spools but
