No doubt many of you will be entertaining in the coming weeks and get into the party spirit. One of the drawbacks is all that washing up afterwards. You don’t want to use disposable tableware because it’s just – well – DISPOSABLE! But you still want to invite lots of people and reduce your stress level.
Enter biodegradable tableware – plates, ‘cutlery’, straws and drinks beakers all of which can be recycled on your compost heap. Some of the ‘cutlery’ is made of wood, which biodegrades like any other part of a tree, other products are made of corn start (which looks and acts like plastic but is biodegradable!).
Now, we don’t suggest you use them for every meal but for those festive parties they might just ease your Eco conscience.
We have found a whole collection of these products on a site called ‘Silly Jokes”, which is odd because it is mainly full of jolly party products and not the place you might expect to find eco products. So, you can shop for eco friendly partyware and buy a whoopee cushion at the same time – we live in a strange world.

Wind to Light – Art
No one seems to want a wind turbine at the bottom of their garden but they might change their mind when they see these.
Artist Jason Bruges has installed 'Wind to Light', a ‘cloud of light’ made up of tiny wind turbines which power LEDs on London’s South Bank. When the wind blows the LEDs light up to produce a kinetic light cloud – a firefly-like shimmer around the south bank architecture.
Part of this year’s Architecture Week theme of “how green is our space’, the installation illustrates alternative, ways of harnessing energy that explore the power of the wind in the city, visualising it as an ephemeral, luminous cloud.
Being able to visualise the direct relationship between wind power and our environment is difficult – this looks like it does just that with elegance and intelligence.

Celebrate Green Weeks in West Bridgford

Blue Peter goes Green
The popular BBC children’s’ program ‘Blue Peter’ is about to be renamed ‘Green Peter’ on 29th May. The entire program will be devoted to eco and ‘green’ issues and much of it has been filmed at the Hockerton Housing Project, Nottinghamshire.
The program will look at ways its young audience can help limit the effects of climate change.
"Green Peter won't be a list of scare stories, the purpose will be to focus on what is being done, what can be done, what needs to be done to protect the world the Blue Peter audience will inherit." (Richard Mason, Blue Peter Editor).
This year the program will celebrate its 50th year on TV and this is the first time they have dedicated an entire program to environmental issues. You can watch it on BBC 1 at 5.00pm, Tuesday 29th May.
