Greening West Bridgford: Challenge 1: if your journey is not far, leave the car!

Soon the whole of West Bridgford will receive the Greening Campaign Challenge cards through their letter box.

One of the challenges is to walk/cycle if your journey is less than 1 mile.

I have just come across a wonderful invention to stay safe and visible on the road for walkers, cyclists, horse riders, and other road users. I hope you find it of interest too.

Smart Electric Bike in London

Quite a lot of us might spend more time moving around on a bike if it wasn’t so much effort.

Electric bikes are not new, there are a lot on the market, but this one has some style and is now available to buy in Central London from some of the ‘Posh’ shops like Harrods and Selfridges.

The A2B Metro electric assisted bike from Ultramotor.com can move you at up to 15.5 mph. which is more than enough to get round a city in comfort. You can also chose to go under your own power so can balance your cycling in the way that fits your mood, energy level of geography.

Its lithium ion battery charges by simply plugging into a power socket in about 3-4 hours so, charge over night and you are ready for the day ahead. Teh manufacturers suggest that this little wonder will move you 20 miles on a single charge.

It isn't cheap at a retail price of £1999.00 but prices will fall (we hope).

Your special invitation to a Broadway screening

At the Big Wheel lots of things have been happening to encourage people to think about the ways they can cycle or walk from A to B.

We’ve organised a special movie screening at the Broadway on Sunday 21st September at 3.15pm to coincide with International In Town Without My Car Day. We’ll show two short films called Seasons which follow the world’s best mountain bike riders as they go around the world, showcasing their talents against a backdrop of stunning scenery. It’s a PG movie with stunning scenery and music, featuring amazing feats around the world.

Electric Bikes

Could electric bikes be the next ‘big thing’? Starting to be known as ‘e-bikes’ these power assisted cycles offer some serious advantages. Very handy for moving around with heavy loads, or hilly biking, they can reach a top speed of around 15 miles per hour.

Clearly not as eco friendly as a normal bike, the e-bike does consume electricity while its battery is being charged - the same as using a 100w light bulb for a few hours. If, however, an e-bike replaces a short car journey there is less damage to the environment.
