A Master of Fine Art student, Maria Michails, currently based at Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona, recently used rowing power as a key element in her MFA installation.
Visitors to the Harry Wood Gallery, at the University, could watch ‘rower-performers’ in a hand crafted boat which contained a modified rowing machine. Kinetic energy from their rowing action generated electricity which powered a display of back-lit photographs on the gallery walls.
The interactive installation explores urban growth and its impact on water use in the Phoenix area valley.
Maria produced a detailed blog about the development and installation of her “Emergy” exhibition.
