After much denial that this was in ‘the pipeline’ councils in England have now been given the go-ahead to introduce pilot schemes to charge households for the amount of rubbish we throw away.
It seems we have to meet European Commission targets for waste disposal or face fines of up to £180 million each year.
Nothing like money to focus the attention. Joan Ruddock, the UK Waste minister commented “We all know we can't go on putting rubbish in holes in the ground. We need to find new ways…”
It will be interesting to see just what these ‘new ways’ will be. In the meantime try unpacking your products at the supermarket and leaving the packaging with them.
